Citroen Traction Avant

Jon Pressnell
978 1 86126 6149
£29.95
Hardback, 240 pages, 280x215 mm, 380 colour photographs

This comprehensive history of the revolutionary car that broke André Citroen is a feast for all motoring Francophiles. Pressnell starts with a short dictionary 'Do you speak Traction?' so you can learn the difference between your Comodo and your Strapontin. There's a brief biography of Le Patron to explain his place in the car's creation before the book dives straight into describing the Traction in its world context. Brief biographies of influential players such as Grégoire and Lefebvre are included to help tell the development - though the author's character shows with his outspoken distaste for Grégoire. Plentiful drawings of the engineering intricacies are combined with period photographs of prototypes to explain the novelty of the solutions used. Where the book excels is in being a definitive text detailing every production change and variant, with pictures, and including examples of all the coachbuilt Tractions, from Antem to Worblaufen. There is a section covering the end of the Traction's life, showing how many were destroyed in stunt driving.

Even the aftermarket extras by manufacturers such as Robri and Splendilux, and the curious inelegance of the Raoul boot extension are covered. One chapter covers the Traction in the resistance during WW2, a picture included on the rear flyleaf instead of the author's mugshot. Buying a Traction and the legacy it left finish the volume. Period adverts, good colour photographs and the depth of research and knowledge displayed earn this work a place in any motoring library.
